Condividiamo la seguente dichiarazione di solidarietà con il movimento per la difesa della Foresta di Weelaunee. Dopo l’omicidio per mano della polizia dell’attivista Manuel Teran la rabbia è esplosa ad Atlanta. In seguito alla veglia commemorativa di venerdì sera, sabato ha avuto luogo una marcia di protesta ad Underground Atlanta.

Per circa un’ora, le persone hanno marciato lungo Peachtree Street nel centro di Atlanta chiedendo giustizia. Tra Ellis Street e Peachtree Street sono iniziati gli scontri con la polizia e sono state attaccate diverse volanti della polizia. In totale sono state arrestate sei persone. 

Chiediamo a tutte le persone di buona coscienza di essere solidali con il movimento Stop Cop City e Defend Weelaunee Forest, il movimento per la difesa della foresta di Weelaunee ad Atlanta.

Il 18 gennaio, nel corso dell’ultima incursione militarizzata nella foresta, la polizia di Atlanta ha sparato ad una persona, uccidendola. Questa è solo la più recente di una serie di violente rappresaglie della polizia contro il movimento. La narrazione ufficiale è che la Cop City è necessaria per rendere Atlanta “sicura”, ma questo brutale omicidio rivela cosa intendono quando usano questa parola.

Le foreste sono i polmoni del pianeta Terra. La distruzione delle foreste riguarda tuttɜ noi. Così come la gentrificazione e la violenza della polizia che l’abbattimento della foresta di Weelaunee faciliterebbe. Quello che sta accadendo ad Atlanta non è un problema locale.

I politici che sostengono la Cop City hanno tentato di screditare lɜ difensorɜ della foresta come “agitatori esterni”. Questa diffamazione ha una storia vergognosa nel Sud, dove è stata usata dalle autorità contro abolizionistɜ, organizzatori/trici/* del lavoro e il Movimento per i diritti civili. L’obiettivo di coloro che diffondono questa narrativa è scoraggiare la solidarietà e isolare le comunità l’una dall’altra, offrendo al contempo un pretesto per far intervenire le forze statali e federali, che sono i veri “agitatori esterni”. Le conseguenze di questa strategia si sono manifestate nella tragedia del 18 gennaio.

Sostituire una foresta con un centro di addestramento della polizia non farà altro che creare una società più violenta, in cui le risorse deɜ contribuenti arricchiscono la polizia e le aziende produttrici di armi invece di rispondere ai bisogni sociali. L’incarcerazione di massa e la militarizzazione della polizia non sono riuscite a ridurre la criminalità o a migliorare le condizioni delle comunità povere e della classe operaia.

Ad Atlanta e in tutti gli Stati Uniti, gli investimenti nei bilanci della polizia vanno a scapito dell’accesso al cibo, all’istruzione, all’assistenza all’infanzia e all’assistenza sanitaria, di alloggi stabili e a prezzi accessibili, di parchi e spazi pubblici, del transito e della libera circolazione delle persone; della stabilità economica per moltɜ. Concentrare le risorse nelle mani della polizia serve a difendere l’accumulo estremo di ricchezza e potere da parte delle corporazioni e dei ricchi.

Cosa fanno gli sbirri con i loro budget aumentati e con la carta bianca dei politici? Uccidono persone, ogni singolo giorno. Incarcerano e traumatizzano scolarɜ, genitori, persone care che stanno semplicemente lottando per sopravvivere. Non dobbiamo accontentarci di una società organizzata in modo sconsiderato sui valori della violenza, del razzismo, dell’avidità e dell’indifferenza verso la vita.

La lotta che si sta svolgendo ad Atlanta è una gara per il futuro. Mentre gli effetti catastrofici del cambiamento climatico colpiscono le nostre comunità con uragani, ondate di calore e incendi boschivi, la posta in gioco è più chiara che mai. Determinerà se coloro che verranno dopo di noi erediteranno una Terra abitabile o un incubo da stato di polizia. Sta a noi creare una società pacifica che non tratti la vita umana come un bene sacrificabile.

Lɜ difensorɜ della foresta stanno cercando di creare un mondo migliore per tuttɜ noi. È nostro dovere, nei confronti dell* abitanti di Atlanta e delle generazioni future di tutto il mondo, sostenerlɜ.

Qui alcuni modi per supportare la difesa della foresta di Atlanta:

• Donate all’Atlanta Solidarity Fund per supportare i costi legali di chi è statə arrestatə e deve quindi andare a processo.
• Esortare agli investitori del progetto di disinvestire dalla città di Cop (elenco degli investitori di APF). Sollecitare i progettisti del progetto a rinunciare ai contratti di costruzione.
• Organizzate fondi di solidarietà politica, fondi per la difesa delle foreste e comitati per la difesa delle foreste nel luogo in cui vivete.
• Organizzare o partecipare ad azioni di solidarietà locale.
• Sostenere e diffondere questa dichiarazione di solidarietà.
