Notav Camp: three days of discussion, debate and initiatives
Renzi’s decision to indefinetly postpone the summit on youth unemployment scheduled for July 11 in Turin is meaningful about the phase we are living in. Whoever is in power (in Italy as in Europe) does not have the ability to find any solution to the crisis, the only perspective they have is to continue to dump its costs on who stands at a lower place in the social hierarchy. For whoever rules us it is necessary to escape from conflict scenarios – and therefore from the possibility that a different way of being could find a space of representation; in order to maintain, even in relation to their own image, a strenght that matches the weakness of their opposing social forces.
In the last year we have witnessed many examples of struggles against the processes of impoverishment, precarization and proletarization that they imposed us, that were able to give a voice to a contrast against the government and the European summits’ policies: the process opened by October 19 and the issue of housing, the NoTav resistance and the many decentralized struggles on the national territory against precarity (from all angles) of living conditions. We are certain that our goal is not, and it cannot be, to simply put together a bunch of collectives and militant groups; rather, our ambition is that of activating mass movements, able to build favourable power balances. At the same time, to look towards Europe does not mean to accept or refuse a space that is anyway defined by its own institutional borders. Rather, it means to look towards those behaviours of refusal that cross and shape it: to be up to the expectations means to bet on the organizable and massifiable ones, not to pursue a formal federation among militant subjectivities hailing from different countries.
Therefore we must consider the problem of recomposing antagonist behaviours around some concrete social needs, to build struggling communities, entrenchment in the territories and a different way of living them, in alternative/contrast to the models imposed by the institutional governance. For this reason, our interpretation wants to be that of a (potential) mass antagonism, rather than let us be guided by ineffective ideological frames of mind.
The issue of youth stays open, it seems clear that the intention of politicians and institutions (short of ideas) is to dump the costs of the crisis upon them, cutting income and services, denying possibilities. The battle about the great unnecessary works, moreover, emphasized that the employment of public resources is structured as wealth (which is not lacking) redistribution from medium and lower classes towards finance and higher and highest classes. In this background, the issue of taxation emerged in a pivotal way in various protest scenarios: in front of an increasingly higher taxation of income that is not matched neither by an increase in services nor by an increase in welfare or redistribution forms.
As we cannot be satisfied of what we have built so far, it remains fundamental to discuss on the coming autumn, the limits we had bumped into and which bets and hypotheses to raise.
