Turin, # July11: Let’s block Renzi, let’s fight European austerity
The choice of the city of Turin as venue for the event is, from this point of view, symptomatic: the city is presented as a shining example of overshoot of the factory-city model, over which what you can see through today is primarily debt, progressive reduction of services and welfare, and impoverishment of large segments of population. Here, where the “Berlusconian” model has never taken root, the so-called “Torino-System” dominates from 20 years: a complicated network of economic, political and personal relations between large banks, foundations, former leaders of leftish parties and Fiat. A model who apparently ran a school: the “left” version of neoliberal capitalism .
On this daily management of the country engages the today’s acceleration giuded by the crisis and by the Troika-imposed measures with the European Fiscal Compact. This included forced balanced budget brought into national constitutions, and reduction of the ratio public debt/GDP. The cancellation of public spending in order to comply these parameters is the unique response fielded by national governments, who are complicit and subordinates. Privatization of services, financialization of welfare and expropriation of the commons are necessary corollaries. Family and community networks, where existent, are the last lifeline before the hell of the individual bearing of a growing debt. For a Europe built on the primacy of finance, demands never end. In spite of considerable public money and savings being thrown inside, the hole is never filled .
For youth, the future depicts a still more radical perspective, without location or perspectives apart from an infinite willingness to meet the needs of capital. No matter what you studied and what are your expectations, you have to be ready and flexible to any request. The point is not to “pull the strap in order to stay in the parameters “, but let us pull the strap to get used to give more and ask for less. Productivity, flexibility, competitiveness and merit are the watchwords of this hostile program, which as Renzi as its Italian name . The first measures taken by his government – House Plan and Jobs Act – are explicit moments of a more general war to the poorest. They are also policy responses to the movements instances, from disputes in the workplace to territorial fights .
We need to reverse this program, reverse the order of priority. We need to order another political agenda, substantiated by the struggle, legitimized in the territories, and capable of throwing sand in their gears and put on medium-term the strategic questions of how, what, how much and for whom to produce. Technological development (automation, computerization) would allow today a generalized reduction in net of the socially necessary work, and yet we are still caught in the meshes of a blackmail that asks us to work harder and harder in order to maintain a deadly and unequal system. The problem then is who decides and in the name of who.
We would like that the day of the 11 of July would put these issues on the agenda, doing it up to the standards of the times we are living, identifying effective and spreadable practices, that will be able to specify a path for the future. For this reason we invite movements, territorial fights, syndicalist unions and many who in recent years have fought against neoliberalism and troika, to participate in a national assembly to discuss together and collectively build the day of fight July 11. The date that we indicate is that of Saturday 31 May, 14 h at Palazzo Nuovo (University of Turin).
