11 March 1977: Francesco Lorusso is murdered by police
The news that police killed a comrade swiftly spread through. The Radio Alice independent grassroots radio broadcasts it at 1.30pm. From that moment onwards, the university area is crawling with comrades, entrances to the zone are shut down in order to avoid new provocations and assemblies are held in all faculties. As the assemblies end, an 8000 people’s march starts, full of grief and anger, moving towards the Christian Democracy party offices, where police charges the head of the cortege, unleashing new clashes. During the demonstration the Resto del Carlino [a petty right-wing leaning daily – T.N.] offices, a couple of police stations, CL’s library and several showcases are set on fire. Finally, some railway lines at the station get occupied. The day ends with a huge assembly at the Odeon cinema.
It is immediately clear to everybody that the murder of Francesco was not accidental but an umpteenth predetermined attack that featured the troops of the Minister of the Interior Cossiga.
From the intervention of a comrade on Radio Alice:
“…therefore we remember that all comrades take full responsibility for of all the events that unfolded today in Bologna. Everybody was part of this huge security service that it was decided to do, all together, were stood with the molotov cocktails, with stones (sanpietrini) in our pockets, because the one today was a violent demonstration, that everyone decided to make a violent one…”
